Bug Description

( Disclaimer: this is more a design flaw than a bug )

Dapper, Gnome.

Click System ► lock screen. Click "switch user". A list asks you for the user to switch to. Click a user who is not logged in. A new gdm appears, which asks you for the username again.

I noticed this makes a very bad impression on newbies, probably because from a user's standpoint it makes no sense.

Thanks for your bug. I've forwarded it upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=342100

That might be something that require a new gdm feature though

The behavior has changed in Dapper final: now it is the password that must be typed twice. It is better, but the problem remains. Maybe the bug's title should be changed.

I can confirm this. The same behavior still happens in Gutsy. It looks unintuitive and gives an impression that operation hasn't worked out.
Since gnome panle user switcher is enabled by default in Gutsy a gdm theme with a user list should be enabled by default. If this shows logged in users it would be great and makes more sense.

This seems to be fixed in current Gutsy.

Switching user does the right thing in Intrepid by taking you right to the password prompt.
