What were you typing in when it blanked? Can you get this to happen every time if you set the screensaver timeout to 1 minute? Does it happen when you are using the mouse? Is there something unique about your keyboard (is it USB or PS2?)

Just various things into my xterm.
My timeout is set to 10 minutes. Don't know about the mouse - I don't have one :) - I have a touchpad. Keyboard is neither usb nor ps2 - its a laptop.

This is really interrupting my work. Every few minutes I have to retype whatever I was in the middle of typing, and dont even thing about when I'm in the middle of a drag n drop operation

MIthrandir suggested killing and restarted gnome screensaver, which worked *until* I rebooted and left the laptop in suspend overnight. At which point its [now] doing it again.

Me too, except that it started happening after resuming from hibernation, not from suspend. Also, 'gnome-screenaver-command -exit' had no effect and I had to kill the daemon.
