Bug Description

Whenever the screensaver times out, the desktop gradually fades away, after which it flickers a bit and jumps back to the desktop
The screensaver refuses to start.

gnome-screensaver-preferences seems to be behaving alright, though.

This doesn't seem to happen when glx is not enabled. (on my nvidia card).
The last time I tried it, it was with Compiz running.
However, apport launched only once, under conditions I'm not able to reproduce. However, I can SEE that the screensaver doesn't start, even though apport doesn't tell me about it. So I'm not sure if the program is CRASHING as such.
glx is not working for me at the moment, so I'll try a backtrace soon after I get it to work.

I can confirm the same behaviour of gnome-screensaver and I don't think (well I'm pretty certain) it's not a crash. When gnome-screensaver is activated after a particular time the very same moment it is interrupted (in the similar way like moving a mouse, etc.) by something until another activation and so on. I use "blank screen" as a screensaver theme, computer screen is regarded as idle after five minutes and "Lock screen when screensaver is active" option is turned off, if it matters. Version 2.24.0-0ubuntu1. I have Intel 855GM video, but it should not be anything related to video.

I can confirm exactly the same behaviour, except for the crash. No crash for me, the same behaviour as Žygimantas reported.

It doesn't depend on chosen screensaver. My card is nVidia NVS 135M.

Version: 2.24.0-0ubuntu2. It worked perfectly on hardy and doesn't in intrepid (upgraded a week ago to beta).

Confirmed from three sources. As the crash can't be reproduced (even original reporter Rishabh can't) but the rest of the behaviour is confirmed, this bug report is no longer incomplete.

No, no. I can.
1. Set screensaver idle time.
2. Wait for the screensaver to time-out.
3. It happens.

The video attached should give you a little idea of what I'm talking about.

Rishabh, I understand screensaver doesn't work ... but does it still crash?

Actually crashing, no.

And I found out something else; it doesn't happen if Compiz is disabled. (i.e.) The screensaver starts normally.
