cannot select text entry field on unlock screen

Sometimes when I resume from suspend I cannot select the text entry field so that I can enter my password, and the cursor is not in the box. The keyboard is unresponsive, but the mouse works as I can click the buttons, just not the text entry field. Then I have to reboot. I can't even use the text console due to the typical nvidia console bug.
