Daniel, the problem reported in this bug report has been tracked down to a misinterpretation of the cmdline output of wvdial by gnome-ppp and various fixed packages are available. Please do not waste further time debugging this issue. The thing we are all waiting for is a patched package to appear in the gusty-updates repository, which however seems very unlikely at this point,
