System incredibly slow after suspend, refuses to restart

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Sometimes, not always, the system (iBook G4, Feisty Beta) is incredibly slow after returning from suspend. Also, not all panel applets show up and networkmanager refuses to work (network deactivated and can't be activated with nm-applet anymore). In a tty console, everything is working fine, but Gnome is incredibly slow and in fact unusable.

ctrl-alt-backspace or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart can't restart the XServer, it is just hanging. Restarting with ctrl-alt-delete results in a normal shutdown and ends with »Will now restart«, but the iBook isn't restarting?! I can restart the iBook via a hard reset finally. After the restart, everything is fine again until it happens the next time.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Also the issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I switched to Gutsy a while ago and just retested it with the current development status. The iBook does not return from suspend completely, i.e. the display isn't powered on again (and it is a bit difficult to work without display). Also, there are no return messages in syslog so I can't tell what is failing.

I can confirm the bug with Gutsy... No resume after suspending the ibook.

I, too, can confirm this bug on a 1,3 GHz G4 iBook with the Gutsy Gibbon inside. The machine goes to sleep (heartbeat LED pulses, backlight is off, everything comes to a halt) when closing the lid. When opening the lid, subsystems audibly restart but the screen remains powered on in a strange configuration (horizontal black and white stripes). Incidentally (or not) a friend of mine has the same problem on his machine.

I'm also having the identical issue running Gutsy Gibbon on my G3 iBook: upon waking from sleep the system starts up, but the display looks like there's a problem with the logic board (horizontal stripes). Mine are green, black and white, but I'm sure the issue is the same. Sounds like this is a fairly widespread problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

this bug is still an issue, al least for me. I'm still using the
feisty fawn at the moment, because it's the most stable ubuntu I can
run..

I'll download the latest develompent release now and report the results here..

See you soon!

No luck for me, Suspend does not appear as an option in the live session (daily live from 20080223), so I installed it. Suspend does still not appear. Information from the bugreport script attached.

I also tried to invoke the dbus-send thing (although it seems useless if suspend capatibility seems to be not recognized by gpm):

dennis@ibook:~$ dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.Hal" /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0
method return sender=:1.5 -> dest=:1.224 reply_serial=2
   int32 1
dennis@ibook:~$

If there is anything more to test/provide information, please let me know.

Pedro, the latest debug log I attached was from a Hardy installation as can easily be seen in the first lines of the text file attached. But nevermind, as soon as there are working installation CDs for Intrepid, I will retest with Intrepid (again).

Im getting this in natty too, or something similar. Suspend/resume work fine and are fast, but after resuming, hard drive access speed is limited to ~4MB/s. USB hard drives plugged into the system are not affected though. It's not quite unusable, but extremely frustrating when doing anything with the hard drive.
