Bug Description

##Fixed in Natty##

Hello,

On my Samsung R610 laptop I try changing the brightness of the LCD screen but pressing the Function and up or down-arrow key it displays the brightness changing notification but does not change brightness and hangs Ubuntu kind of. No menu will open, keyboard not responsive. Mouse works but cannot do much. Only power button lets me restart.

Noticed in the messages log:

[Firmware Bug]: ACPI: ACPI brightness control misses _BQC function

Help, please.

Thanks in advance.

What are we waiting for, currently? April 2013 :):) Let know what you guys still need.. One thing I can tell is that Meerkat is having much simular problems related with changing brightness with Nvidia display system installed and using the Fn (Up or Down) arrow key. It results in a popup notification of changing brightness while resulting in not responsive Ubuntu menu and can wait > 30 mins for to be able to use keyboard again. With this textbox while typing these words.

Best regards,

Oswald

Fabio - designers - all,

Tried it in booting from USB with Ubuntu Natty release dated 02-feb-2011 (today) in the 32bit and the 64bit versions with the nuveau(?) driver active brightness levels change without problems!

In meerkat it is now also working after a workaround using "smartdimmer -i" assigned with keyboard shortcuts to other keys. With the latest (260.19(?)) version of Nvidia drivers active.

Cheers,
Oswald

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about it at http://www.ubuntu.com/download . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Running Natty and no more hangs, now changing backlight still does not work, works now using smartdimmer terminal command. Will test with 11.10 CDROM.
