Bug Description
Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
If I start my laptop without the power cable inserted, it will freeze once the gnome background picture comes up. The mouse does not respond and neither will the keyboard. I can see that the time has also stopped.
If I start the laptop with the power cable it works fine, until I remove the cable. Then it will also freeze and become totally unresponsive. The only way (I have found) to get it back and working is a hard reboot.
I have not seen this problem on Ubuntu 9.10 but it is 100% reproducible (for me at least) on Ubuntu 10.04.
Without knowing anything about g-p-m, it is as if the cable-remove event causes the laptop to crash.

A likely candidate for this could be the powersave scripts. Can you please uninstall the pm-utils- powersave- policy package, and check if it still happens?
If so, please reinstall it again, and try this instead:
sudo mv /usr/lib/ pm-utils/ power.d/ 95hdparm- apm /usr/lib/ pm-utils/ power.d/ 95hdparm- apm.orig
If it still happens, please move it back with
sudo mv /usr/lib/ pm-utils/ power.d/ 95hdparm- apm.orig /usr/lib/ pm-utils/ power.d/ 95hdparm- apm
Right after you encounter such a freeze, can you please reboot and attach /var/log/kern.log?
