I found an easy way to get the brightness
$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
If this was Javascript I would do this with the string to get the percentage

var str='levels: 20 28 36 44 52 60 68 76 84 92 100\ncurrent: 60';
alert('Laptop back light is at '+str.substr(str.indexOf('current: ')+'current: '.length)+'%.');

This could be used as a backup when it can't get the brightness using the current method
Using Ubuntu 10.04.1
