Same problem here (almost), see bug #428054. This seems to affect pretty many Intel users... Anyone with laptop powered by modern Intel GPU with working backlight?

Bug #428054 is now closed, but the problem wasn't the same. Could try running "xrandr --prop" in console, and post the items listed below BACKLIGHT_CONTROL?

Care to take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting and gather additional info regarding key events being generated or not. Thanks!

xev does in fact register the correct event. This is a gnome-settings-manager or gnome-power-manager issue.

There has been a driver update, -intel is now 2.9.0-based. Could you update packages, and see if there's any difference? That update fixed backlight controls for me - works OOTB as expected...

Thank you for your bug report. gnome-settings-daemon doesn't have anything to do with brightness keys though, so I'm reassigning to gnome-power-manager.

Please kill the currently running instance of gnome-power-manager, run the following, press your brightness keys a few times and then attach the resulting log:

gnome-power-manager --debug 2>&1 | tee gpm.log

Thanks

Any news about FN keys brightness not working (and an ev. patch) on Aspire 5810 Timeline. I am planning purchasing the model running Karmic.

so the brightness keys seem to work with the latest bios update. the catch, which I would like to see if anyone else encounters, is that when you use them the touchpad stops working. can anyone else confirm this?

They put out a patch for the bios update I mentioned. it makes no difference.

executorvs, how do you update the BIOS running Ubuntu as a single OS? Do you have a dual boot?

I've got stock kernel 2.6.32.3 and Debian (not Ubuntu), so all this FWIW.

On my 5810TZ, xrandr --prop does not show BACKLIGHT_CONTROL. Backlight keys do not work, but when booting *without* nomodeset (some posts on the Internets suggest that "nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor" fixes this, but for me it doesn't), it does show "Backlight" and "BACKLIGHT" (if booting *with* acpi_backlight=vendor, even these settings disappear):

Doing "xrandr --output LVDS1 --set Backlight 5" (or whatever number from 0..9) doesn't seem to change anything, but I noticed by accident that after setting the value using that command, pressing the backlight setting keys on the keyboard (Fn+arrow keys) sets then the backlight to the brightness set with xrandr.
