No low-power-message and no hibernate on laptop, some time before, gnome-power-manager didn't react clicks

Bug Description

The gnome-power-manager systray-applet did't react my clicks on my laptop. Later, with no message or hibernation (normally it is right), the laptop turned off while talking over VoIP.
What could went wrong? Is it only the applet or a power deamon who failed? Or could it be a hardware error…

I don't know which package and which config files are responsible to start the hibernation progress. The hibernation works when started manual. The message that e.g. 10% are left is showed. When ca. 4% are left, the Laptop turns of immediately. How can I reset the behaviour pm-utils-*, laptop-mode etc. to default? Which packages are installed in Lucid by default? Do I have to purge the config files when removing packages?
Thanks and greetings,
Kai

Hello Kai Lüke

Can you run in a terminal this command:

apport-collect -p gnome-power-manager 386121

Then can you please attach these files:

/var/log/syslog

/var/log/dmesg

/var/log/ker.log

affects: ubuntu → gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu)

Hello Kai Lüke

in order to confirm the bug just remains few little step.

Just click on the below write 'Add attachment or patch', a window will be open, in the left panel click 'File system', then in the right window click on 'var' - 'log' - 'syslog' , click on the button 'Open', then click on the button 'Post comment'.

The same operation need to be repeated for var-log -dmesg and var-log-kern.log

Thanks
:)Fabio

It makes no sense, because the only bug is, that after the low-power-message there is no hibernate, the laptop just turns off. So I could send the system logs now, but the laptop is on and so there was now bug until now, because its still on.
I would like to try if the bug also apprears, when I have a default configuration installed. But I don't know which power-related packages are installed by default and which not. Also the old configuration of them should be purged before reinstall.

Alternative one could tell me which application executes the hibernation command when the power is low and I could do research on my own.

Hello Kai Lüke
If you take a look at your syslog, surely it contains two or more days of activities.
I ask you this logfile because i think that contains usefull infos about the problem and if the system take a workaround during a problem in hybernation process.

OK, sorry, I have a tmpfs log-dir. But just a few minutes ago, the g-p-m crashed after plugin off the cable (see newest bug-reports):
dmesg:

[ 71.430183] wlan0: associated
[ 71.433201] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready

Suspending and hibernate normally works well if used manually, but after low-power-message it turns off.
Now I changed the following and will try it again.

· changed SUSPEND_METHODS="dbus-pm dbus-hal pm-utils" to SUSPEND_METHODS="pm-utils dbus-pm dbus-hal" in /etc/default/acpi-support

· changed gconf-settings of g-p-m from the usage of time as indicator for auto-suspend on low power to the use of percentage.

Juhu, everything was ok now!

Maybe the change to percentage was the solution or maybe not going through d-bus, but directly to pm-utils. Because I tried suspend manually through dbus and it fails:

dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend

bash: dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend: No such file or directory

Same for Hibernate.
