I see this also with jpilot on an unmodified but updated dapper install - /dev/pilot or /dev/ttyUSB* doesn't appear until you press the button, but jpilot wants the button pressed after you've asked it to do something and it's bound to the port! I also get multiplying /dev/ttyUSB* devices.
I blew up my old Treo a week or two ago and had to restore the backup onto the new one - not being able to do that was a disaster! Fortunately, my housemate's machine wasn't yet upgraded to Dapper and so I was able to copy my jpilot data across and use that. But still, please sort this out ASAP! If I can help with debugging, let me know.
