The 'invalid free' bug has just been fixed in CVS. I don't know why it has only recently shown up (it was reported on fedora) as the problem code was rather old. Anyway, that's a straight bug.
Another problem has also been fixed, which may have caused some of the unreliability problems. Frank: do you find multiple /dev/ttyUSB* devices being created and hanging around? i.e. more than just the usual two? If so, you're affected by this bug, which again has been fixed in CVS.
