Gnome-photos had not been started this session (have NOT been able to). Error came unexpectedly out of the blue.

Same here, I randomly seem to get this error even though I have not started gnome-software in the session I get the error in, though it does seem that it is always running in the background. But it will just randomly tell me that it closed unexpectedly.

This issue has been fixed upstream (see linked upstream bug report) and the fix has been released so it should be backported in.
