Bug Description
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
I'm not entirely certain that the bug is in gnome-panel, but that is where it likely lies. Steps to hopefully reproduce the error in Ubuntu 7.04 Herd 5:
1) Right click time in panel and select "Preferences"
2) Set time display mode to Unix Time.
Immediately after doing this, my only panel at the top of the screen flickered and died. I killed x and relogged in to experience the same initial flickering and eventual removal of the panel. Rebooted to again experience the same problem.

Confirming. The only way to recover is to edit the gconf key to something other than `unix'.
