switching to 'UNIX' time crashes session

Bug Description

When I switch the time to 'UNIX' in the clock applet, gnome-panel goes to lunch. The session manager? begins to cycle, can't use the menus or launch an alt-f2 emergency repair. To be certain, I created a new user account and switched it's clock to UNIX with similar results... Someone else on the ubuntu forums reproduced the behavior on another machine: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2240327#post2240327
