Strange background color of clock applet

The background of the clock widget become brown in some situations.
Steps to reproduce the problem: click on the clock widget (the calendar will show). Click again on it (the calendar will close) and then click on another applet which has a dropdown menu.

Seems to be a duplicate of bug 439448. This master bug report covers a multitude of different issues that users are having with that area of the gnome-panel.
