Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After I logged in the Ubuntu,I found that there are duplicate icons in the gnome-panel and the shutdown icon is nowhere to be found. It happened frequently.Even now when I am writing the bug report,I have a duplicate sound icon in my gnome-panel.One sound icon is the Indicator Applet and that right. But the other one is Notification Area and it shows the icon that Indicator Applet shows.

If you do not understand what I was trying to say,you can ask me for some screen shots. My email is aimicheng%%163.com(replace %% with @)

My experience with Ubuntu Lucid so far, on 3 family laptops that I "administer", is that gnome-panel and related applets/notification stuff is completely erratic and unstable: double icons, missing icons, notification stopping randomly, unpredictable placement, etc.

See these other (there may be others) reports:

This bug is so common, that it is reported on Planet Ubuntu (with some sort of workaround):

C'mon folks, let's do something with this bug report (or any another one related that is more well documented if you want). There's no way I can consider this bug as "low importance" since:

- Gnome panel and related applets/notification stuff is at the heart of the Ubuntu Lucid experience
- Ubuntu Lucid is a LTS, not "just" an "ordinary interim release.

BTW, I'm clearly not a developer, but I'm ready to help as a long time Ubuntu "advanced user" who could do some testing/log based report with clear and helpful directions.

Thanks.

I see this as well every few days on a laptop I administer. The workaround from Planet Ubuntu has to be used to get things working again. I am going to mark this Confirmed since the reporter provided the screenshots and the Planet Ubuntu article at http://en.andregondim.eti.br/?p=160 describes and displays the problem perfectly.

I also am going to up the priority since in a normal default desktop install, the average user will no longer be able to logout without having to use the power button, which could conceivably cause loss of data. I will start with Medium, but this is a major usability issue and could probably easily go to High.

Changed in gnome-panel (Ubuntu):
importance: Low → Medium
status: Incomplete → Confirmed

I'm told that this may be a duplicate of bug #439448. If people can check and report if it is a duplicate, that would be great. Help in the other bug would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, after reading all the comments in bug #439448, I feel strongly this is a duplicate and am marking as such. Future comments should go in that bug. If someone can provide specific steps to reproduce the bug, that would be wonderful. Most people seem to hit this only occasionally (eg every few days).
