Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Since I upgraded from 9.10 UNR to lucid I am getting this problem regularly, every time a window is closed. See the attached screenshot - an instant and very regular disappearance of the panel when any window is closed. The panel process is actually active, both nautillus and maximus processes are working, the panel itself is not dead but is invisible, totally invisible until X is killed or the computer is restarted.
Computer is an EEEpc 701 4GB, here comes lspci output:

Thank you for your bug report, do you have the same issue using GNOME? Do you use the desktop effects? Which video driver do you use?

Hi!
I have a similar issue in GNOME, yes, when maximus and netbook-launcher are running. Have not checked if the panel would disappear in a plain gnome session.
I am not using desktop effects.
Here is what Xorg reports in /var/log:

(II) LoadModule: "intel"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
 compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 2.9.1
 Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 6.0

If you have enabled Metacity's compositing manager (to use GnomeDo's plugins, for example), netbook-launcher is not compatible. I was experiencing the same issue, and disabling Metacity's compositing manager (via gconf-editor) fixed it. See #523927 for more info.
