Happens to me on 2 different Lucid machines, one with AMD HD4670, proprietary driver via jockey, one with Intel GMA4500.
Usual behaviour is for a sound indicator icon to show where network manager normally lives, and time portion of the clock to repeat the half the date instead. The other day I also had graphic for the memenu show where the power button (indicator applet session?) normally is, meaning I had no graphical shutdown option (had to ctrl-alt-del). All of these erroneous graphics are un-clickable.

I'm almost sure the bug is caused by - let's call it - NetworkManager icon inside Notification Area applet!

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel click "Properties". In "Panel Properties" change panel orientation to "Left" or "Right" and back to "Top" or "Bottom". In my case all icons are displayed properly, but one (mentioned above) is missing.

Do not logout (as I did before) or reboot (as some of you did) please and confirm, if the trick with panel orientation worked for you, next time problem shows up :)

I fully switched to Wicd instead of NM, but the same problem occurs. It must me something with Notification Area 2.30.0!

Attached is a screenshot of the bug. I tried Inox's suggestion (Right click panel -> properties -> align left -> align right-> align top)

This restored the missing "power" icon in the right side of the panel. The network manager icon, however, is still gone

Sorry (or not) to say, but I cannot reproduce the error anymore. I've done some cleanup with my panels (removed the Top one). The only applets I got rid of were "Menu Bar" (I use "Main Menu" instead - because it fits better) and "Indicator Session Applet" (when removed "Main Menu" gains additional buttons to logout, reboot or power off). I would recommend it to you as a temporary workaround (if you don't bother M$-like style:D).
