Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I don't know whether the issue with the gnome-panel and workspace manager are related.

I've had problems with gnome-panel after installing Lucid yesterday. Initially, the gnome-panel just wouldn't load, although Alt+F1 would work. I then removed .gconf .gconfd, .gnome2 .gnome2_private and restarted. The issues persisted.

Finally, killall gnome-panel worked. However I'd have to do this on each restart. And, many panels would crash on my trying to open the workspace properties (I just wanted two workspaces).

I've tried reinstalling as many panel/applets related packages I could find. I enabled apport by default and then deleted the same directories through tty1 before logging in (rather than through a terminal window after logging in). Now the panel seems to be loading properly, I'm going to try to restart again and check though.

After doing all this though, only the workspace manager crashed (unlike earlier when many more applets were crashing also) when I tried to load the workspace properties. With apport now enabled, I hope this will provide some more information about what happened.
