Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

On a karmic koala updated from 9.04 via the beta the following problem occurs:

When the panel is placed at the bottom and autohide is enabled, the panel hangs

On reboot Xorg and gnome-panel uses 100% CPU and hogs the memory (500+mb each and rising).

I have to remove the setu by
gconftool-2 --shutdown && rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel && pkill gnome-panel

Steps to reproduce:
1. Place panel at bottom
2. Enable autohide

When then panel is at the top autohide works

Please try to obtain a backtrace manually of the hang following the instructions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace (as an attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

I have the same problem, but with clean install, no update.

This bug is extremely trivial to troubleshoot:

1) Right-click on top panel -> Properties

2) Select Orientation: Bottom

3) Check "Autohide"

4) Click Close

5) Make the panel hide/autohide

Why do we have to make trace if ANYONE can reproduce it? Some of us have no idea how to get the traces, not to mention go through the hassle of recovering the system after doing this steps!

The developers have better chance of fixing this if they do the above steps themselves.
