On the main Startup desktop menu we have...

System -> About Gnome but NO System -> About ubuntu as with previous versions.

This is where the first-time user, trying out a Live version, can be shown the ubuntu
philosophy and told which version of ubuntu he/she is using.

Thank you for your bug report. This is because ubuntu-docs is no longer shipping a /usr/share/omf/about-ubuntu/about-ubuntu-C.omf, which our gnome-panel patch tests for the existence of when deciding whether to display the menu item or not.

I think that rather gnome-panel shipping a desktop file for about-ubuntu, and then testing for the existence of some random file in ubuntu-docs before displaying the desktop file, ubuntu-docs should probably ship the desktop file itself (like any other application would).

This bug was fixed in ubuntu-docs 9.10.3 - please upgrade to that version and reopen the bug if you still experience the issue.

I don't have a view about Chris' idea about shipping the desktop file in the ubuntu-docs package, probably the gnome-panel maintainer is better placed to comment on that. I haven't seen any problems caused by the current method (this bug would have been present in any event, regardless of which package shipped the desktop file) so I would tend to leave things as they are.
