Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

when clicking shiny switcher to go to a new screen the bottom panel dissapears. changing screens with the mouse does not bring it back. alt tab bring up apps from the panel. and the bottom panel appears and top panel dissapears.
I removed shiny switcher

so I logged off and back on - this is perhaps when the crash happened - and yes it may be related to the non-free video drivers. I'm getting used to them being blamed for all my problems but the system is much harder to use without. I submitted but will stop submitting if this proves to be another video driver issue.

I followed the fir part of the instructions ... got to running it
the command I assume I need to run is
G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log gnome-panel --sm-config-prefix /gnome-panel-EyArCj/ --sm-client-id 101c65adefd2d4511412419161071025200000035360021 --screen 0
or just up to the gnome-panel part
anyway I get the error
Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running
I must be doing something wrong! ... could you supply me with the command or what I need to turn off to run the test.

you need to log into a non GNOME session and start gnome-panel there for example

Since this report have a long time without activity, please could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.

this issue is no longer happening.
I'm still on the same hardware - toshiba satellite amd 64 turion with ati radeon graphics
I'm running UBUNTU Karmic 64 bit and use the ati/amd fglrx driver found under hardware drivers.
The Visual effects are on extra.
I use awn and shiny switcher.
I also switch to a mac theme.
I have zero problems.
I will submit a partial hardware test to make sure the info is updated in launchpad
