Bug Description

The icons is the Application and System menus seem too need to cache when you click on them for the first time.
This makes an ugly pop up when all the icons load and could be confusing to a new user.

I agree, this looks very bad and is very confusing.
The icons should be pre-loaded.

Agreed, it makes Ubuntu appear slow or that it is suffering from performance problems.

I am having trouble reproducing this behavior in Karmic. Caleb, can you test Karmic on your machine and report if the problem has changed?

Try a fresh reboot, and then navigate the menu. Once they're loaded,
it doesn't happen again.

I did just that, Martin. I rebooted three time to test it, and could not get it to lag. Have you tested in Karmic?

I have not!
Maybe it's fixed in karmic already?

I can confirm that the loading is still taking place when the icons are needed, but the loading times seem to have somewhat improved in karmic. I did however test this when there was little other disk activity, I suspect that the loading lag would be longer when other disk activity is taking place. As such, I'm setting this as confirmed.

I have that problem on ubuntu jaunty. In my laptopn (semprom, 512mb ram) I login into gnome and press the menu button. It takes about 3-4 seconds until I can see it. The new users (or old users :) can think Ubuntu is slow (really it is slow the first time I open the menu)

I have one reproducible test case (at least in my case, using Jaunty): if I have a DVD with a windows game (The Sims 2) in the drive, and I click on the "Places" menu the first time after login into Gnome, the icons are not shown until the drive spun up and the icon of the game is being loaded. This can easily take some seconds, during which no icon of any of the menu entries is being shown at all.

The fix for this appears to be non-trivial, so this can no longer be considered a paper cut.
