Panel does not retain initial reordering of applets

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

1) Ubuntu Jaunty RC1
2) gnome-panel 2.26.0-0ubuntu6
3) After fresh install, unlock applets on right side of top panel, reorder and relock. Items should retain their order after reboot or restarting gnome-panel.
4) Items revert to original order.

This happens only on the first reorder--subsequent changes are retained. I delete all panel items on the right (including divider) except clock, volume, and notification area.

I put them in left-to-right order:
  notification, clock, volume
After restart, they are ordered:
  clock, volme, notification

Placing them in the correct order again fixes the problem.

This does not seem to be the same bug.

This is intial reordering retention, not location retention.
This is not caused by screen resolution. It is caused by simply restarting gnome-panel.
The expected behavior, actual behavior, and description of the problem do not match the "original" bug this has been duped against.

Please review this bug's description again. If the behavior is known with certainty to be caused by the same bug causing the screen resolution bug, then perhaps the other bug's summary and description should be updated to be inclusive of this behavior.

could be another bug I just picked one of those describing similar issues, you can go through the open bugs if you want though

I have been through open bugs and have not found a similar bug reported. The discussion for the other bug confirms that this is not a duplicate, but another issue entirely. Can this be reopened?

From my experience the issues are related in the fact that it is the way gnome stores the positions of the applets that is problematic. Try, after unlocking and relocking, to have a look at gconf under /apps/panel/applets to see how the positions are stored. This would show if the information is not updated at all or if the information is stored "chaotically".
