Bug Description

On a clean install of Jaunty Alpha 6, upon login the gnome-panel is frozen, it appears correctly most of the time but sometimes is just completely white. I first tried to move it and interact with the panel to no avail, I then tried alt+F2 which was also non-responsive. As I could not use the panel, I had to create a launcher on the desktop to get a gnome-terminal up. the command
killall gnome-panel
fixes the problem for that session, if I log out then back in its fine, but if i reboot i have to kill the panels again.

affects: ubuntu → gnome-panel (Ubuntu)

I looked into backtracing, but it tells me to run the program under the control of gdb, but gnome-panel starts automatically, and if i kill it and restart under gdb the problem wont be there because killing it makes it work again.

Is there anyway of using gdb on a program that has already hung?

did you read the wiki documentation indicated? the backtrace page has a "already running programs" section which should describe that

Sorry for my previous post, didnt read the whole wiki page before posting -- the info on backtracing on the wiki did not work, but someone in #ubuntu+1 sorted me out, here is the backtrace

the stacktrace has no debug symbols can you install libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg gnome-panel-dbg and get a new one?

the log is not really useful, gnome-panel doesn't seem to be doing anything special there

Ok, is there anything else I should try?

do you still get the issue? you could perhaps open the bug on bugzilla.gnome.org where the software writters will read it

maybe this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/448084 ?

In 25% of the cases gnome-panel hangs on startup while loading the systray + indicator applet. I have this issue both on my desktop as laptop.

Killing the gnome-panel makes it usable again.

another thought. Do you use the weather plugin? (that's something both my computers have in common)

This bug is not present on Jaunty or Karmic - I would suggest closing

Bug still affects me; I'll try to get a trace; it's hard, since gnome-panel can't seem to be cleanly killed.

Even killing it with -9 and it starts up incomplete/frozen... I'll keep trying.
