Looks like the same bug as #27576

Sometimes the Application menu doesn't show up, while the Places and System menu still work. Also the Main menu keeps working fine.
The only way to make the Application menu work again is to kill gnome-panel (it will restart automatically).

I have to admit: I use Xgl, and haven't tried this with 'normal' X.org

I noticed that the Places and System menu both have a glass like hoover effect, while the Application menu just turns blue while hoovering.

This problem doesn't occur for me anymore since I've deleted the configuration folders in my home folder:
.gconf
.gconfd
.gnome
.gnome2
.gnome2_private
.gnome_private

Probably there is some incompatibility in the configuration between older and newer packages.

Can you try the following:
- Log out of Gnome
- move the folder mentioned above to another location
- Log in again

Does this also work for you?

Hi,
Do you have this problem with edgy? Did it continue to happen once dapper was released?

Hi
I don't have this problem with the newer Ubuntu versions.
All works fine.
