Gnome menus sluggish and breakable

Bug Description

After upgrading to 8.10 alpha 4 I have noticed a change in the way menus in Gnome are loaded and displayed.

Before menus would be displayed quickly and the icons on that menu would load as you watched it.

Now the menus take a second or more to load and the icons are all loaded when it's displayed.

However, this makes the menus sluggish and also breaks them if you scroll over different menus quickly while one menu is being loaded. The broken menu is then stuck on screen and the program issuing the menu freezes. I will attach a screenshot of a gnome menu stuck on the desktop. I also managed to break a menu under Gimp but this unfortunately lead to a completely unresponsive system with ctr-alt-backspace the only option.

To duplicate this bug i had to start a hard-drive intensive program.

I can confirm this issue in my system after upgrading to intrepid alpha 4. With any themes, Human, Murrine Human, New Human and others.
