Bug Description

The new gnome panel clock displays calendar and selected cities on click. I have selected 2 cities. Whenever I click on time, calendar appears in like 2-3 seconds, although my machine is far from slow (Core Duo processor, 1G RAM). IMHO such delay is against common user interface practices and is annoying

Thank you for your bug. That's known upstream already

I have the same problem. I have a google calendar account configured in evolution. When that account is deactivated the delay goes away.

Sebastian, where is this known upstream?

the guys who are working on the code know about the issue, they already have replaced the svg image for faster loading

Reason I asked is that there are now two people (including me) for whom this
doesn't seem to have to do with the SVG image. I disabled my Google Calendar
in Evolution and also noticed the problem disappear. Sounds like there might
be two separate issues causing this, but do you know if the Google Calendar
problem has made it upstream? (I'm going to look in the meantime.)

no idea about the google calendar thing and that might be a different issue

Vytas, do you have a Google Calendar (or any secondary calendars) in Evolution?

Don't want to hijack this bug, but it seems like the calendar thing is this issue, but it's hard to say without more specifics from the reporter. Either way, here's the GNOME bug related to the calendar problem: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=515948. I'll mark it here once we hear from Vytas.

Yes, I have Google calendar configured as read-only Web calendar (because Evolution's Google calendar is still slightly buggy, maybe I need to fill another bug on that... ).

I don't know what was causing the issue, but now it seems to be much better. Calendar appears in like 0.5 sec. It is still not instant, but to be honest it never was since the calendar support was integrated a few GNOME releases ago. Also, it displays appointments properly now.

So if we just want parity with previous GNOME release, we can mark this fixed.

However, I see no reason for those 0.5 sec -- it is an applet that is loaded to memory anyway, shouldn't it appear instantly, just showing/hiding its widget?

The GNOME bug reported at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=515948 is another issue, it is that calendar never appears and panel freezes forever. I had reproduced this once too though with earlier releases in Hardy. Anyway, I think it should be filed as a different issue. My bug report was that calendar is functioning, just takes very long time to appear (was 3 sec and more).

OK, marking this fixed. I just reported bug 194505 to cover the problem with Google calendars used in Evo causing similar behavior. (Sorry again for hijacking this bug.)

Nothing to do with google for me.
I am using plain old gnome calendar, straight out of the box, albeit with an extra country configured.
For me, it seems it takes forever (5 seconds) to load and show.
But this is only the first one or two times I click it.
Subsequent times it is fast again.
Reboot, click it, slow again, next time i click, fast again.
