Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

No keyboard text input is possible in contact-lookup-applet and revelation-account-search if compiz is running, switching to metacity enables text input via keyboard.

Can confirm that bug for revelation-account-search and the dictionary applet.

Scott: How many panels are you running? I have two of them: One covering full width on top and a compact one on bottom.

We second that.

Copy/paste is possible, as noted in the duplicate bug, but w/o focus it's just not enough :) Has focus only after login, until a window is opened. Tried to add a number of panels and experiment w/ compiz settings to no avail.

Since we use a miriad of revelation-stored passwords, it's a compiz blocker for us.

I just upgraded to Gutsy and enabled compiz. The Revelation applet text field is now useless to me as well. :( I've got the default panel setup and 3x3 desktops if that helps anybody. This is a big issue for me too, as I've got way too many sites in my life. ;)

I can confirm it too. Standard default setup.

Confirming, it also affects the calendar. It used to be possible to change the percentage of completion of tasks, but they exhibit this same behavior.

confirmed with dictionary applet
I cannot copy and paste text under Gutsy. I can, however, highlight text in the applet's text field. There is no blinking cursor at any time.

The highlight is grey, not orange, which means focus does not switch from the previously focused window to the applet...

Same for me on two different computers. Also, vncviewer password request window that comes up when doing "vncviewer computername" has to be unfocused first and then refocused before I can enter the password.

Travis Watkins,

In the email I got (being subscribed to this thread) you list:

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)
       Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

I am not sure a change is required in gnome-panel, as stated, I have the same problem with other windows.

Can we have the backport for Gutsy please? I've got just 5 GB of traffic per month, so upgrading to Hardy is impossible to me, due the frequent package updates.

FWIW: +1 on the "backport this to gutsy" request. Right now I work around it by switching to an empty desktop, but I often find myself sending the word I want to look up to IRC because I always forget that the damn thing that used to work for ages now suddenly requires this silly workaround.

Kinda getting tired of all the "hey, you misspelled '$word', you moron!" replies. ;)

This is happening to me right now on another computer running Karmic Koala.
If I boot into Gnome (running Compiz) the keyboard input is not accepted.
The keyboard still works but will not put input into any input boxes.
If I run GNOME Failsafe the system works.

FWIW: I have the same issue with 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). Neither the revelation nor dictionary panel applets will accept keyboard focus (i.e., can't type into them) if Visual Effects is Normal or Extra (System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects). With Visual Effects set as None, I can type into the text entry of the two applets.

What plugins do you have enabled?
