Hello Sarah,

the error is being reported against gnome-panel, not automatix2 -- or
did I misread it?

As hggdh said previously, I reported this as the error came from gnome-panel (ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-panel).

Or am I missing something really obvious?

you should not automatix, it's likely to break things on your installation and do non supported changes. The crash looks like a duplicate of bug #85776
