Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After upgrading from Dapper to Edgy to Feisty, many icons in the gnome panel as well as some in the main menu are broken, no matter what icon theme I choose to use. It makes some gnome applets unusable, since they are only visible by their icon. Also the problem occurs in every user account.

what icon theme do you use? do you have any error to .xsession-errors then?

I'm using the default 'Human' icon theme. I only get the following errors related to gnome-panel:

** (gnome-panel:21641): CRITICAL **: failed to load icon 'lpi-help': Icon 'lpi-help' not present in theme

(gnome-panel:21641): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_theme_load_icon: assertion `error == NULL || *error == NULL' failed

Does running:
- sudo touch /usr/share/icons/hicolor
- sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor

and restarting your session fixes the bug?

Running the commands you suggested did not fix the problem.

Does removing /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache make it work?

Removing /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache does in fact fix
the bug. For performance reasons is there a way to generate a new
cache? Thank you for the help.

The gtk-update-icon-cache call described does regenerate the cache
