Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a vertical panel that contains two drawers. Neither of the drawers will retain the sort order of the contained icons across reboots. The only way to make it behave is by locking each of the items. Of course, this is rather cumbersome and should not be necessary.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Does it happen every time? Is the order changing every time or is it just using a constant sorting different of the one you used?

Hi.

I'm using edgy with all the latest updates. The panel reports version 2.16.1, don't know whether the drawer has its own version number and how to see it.

It seems that the sorting is constant and different from the one I'd like to see.

I'm attaching a screenshot of some quick tests I did on my home PC (I reported the bug from work, but I could easily replicate the behavior from home). The upper drawer is the one I prepared manually. The lower drawer is the one after the fist (and second) reboot.

Could you try if that's also happening on the new Ubuntu 7.04 version or on gutsy?

Sure.

I still have to report that sort orders are not retained. I am now on Feisty, the Panel reports version 2.18.1, but I can see no apparent changes to the behavior described above.

May you please try to reproduce the same with Gutsy Gibbon? You may get a CD Image from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ thanks in advance.

No, sorry, but I'm definitely not going to download a complete ISO image and install a system just to try to replicate a bug.

I can confirm the behaviour.
If the screen size changes, the order will change. Especially - if there is no free space left in panel.

My preferred behaviour:
Remembering distance in percentage (depending on panel width or height) and keep the correct order. (xfce panel for example do that explicit )

Sorry. I should have updated this earlier.

Yes, the bug is still present in Gutsy.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I tested with the Hardy RC and I can still replicate the issue.

No idea how to re-open a bug; setting the status to 'New' after reporting the bug upstream.
