If i rerun Orca, the problem is fix and orca speak again, but lose speech another time. I look this problem with my old Clevo notebook and my desktop computer, and this problem is present. My desktop computer parameters: Cpu: Amd Athlon64 X2, 3800+. Memory: 2X512 Mb DDR800 Mhz Kingmax ram. Hdd: Samsung 250 GB Sata-II hdd. Kernel version: linux-2.6.24 generic. Video card: Nvidia Geforce 6100 (integrated with my motherboard). My motherboard type: Asus MPW-mx. All security updates is present. Hello Luke.

Thanks you your letter
Well, this bug is very interesting, because not have a constant time for
speech loss. If I work the system with Orca e.g. with gedit application
and editing text, the speech loss not constant time. E.g. if I working
the translations with po files, it is a very lot of cursor positioning
move english text and hungarian text.
I don't know it is an espeak bug, or gnome-speech component bug, or orca
bug. I think this not Orca bug, because I see the debug.out file Orca
not crash, because after lose speech, I seed with debug.out file another
keystrokes and event I doed, e.g. I saved the po file, exited gedit
application, and copyed the debug.out file with another directory with
gnome-terminal but before I doing this actions Orca not speech.
This problem I reproduced not one machine, my desktop computer and old
laptop computer presents this problems, so, not a driver problem.
In weekend, I worked my laptop computer with hungarian translation
weekend. If I worked with root user, the speech loss problem very lot of
present, but if I worked with hammera user (my normal username), the
speech loss problem minimal number. (if I root logged in, five ten
fifteen minutes Orca alvays lose speech, if I worked hammera, speech
loss problem only number of free max five loss eight hour work).
I don't understand, what's the matter.
Because the blind people only root username doing the system
administration with speech, it is important work correct.

I tryed the latest espeak test version, not help.
Every day I update the system with apt-get update, apt-get upgrade
command, not solve this problem.

Have any ydeas what can I trying?

Thanks, and hope help.

Attila

I have experienced this bug too. It's still here in the final release of Hardy. It's impossible to reproduce with any reliability because it is so random. It just happened as I was writing this message. For me, it mostly happens with Firefox and Evolution. It can, however, occur in any application at any time.

This problem present any application, any time with normal user and root user in final release. Not matter the new pulseaudio feature? Because in Gutsy this problem is not present. In yesterday, I logged irc with irc://freenode.org and #ubuntu-hu talk my friends. I Pidgin. Orca lose speech four time. In friday, I worked gedit an Openoffice.org writer, Orca lose speech six time. Every situations I logged with normal user, not root user. Orca version is 2.22.1, but I upgraded the Orca developing version, the problem is not fixed. It is not computer specific problem, because My desktop machine and my laptop produce same problem. How can using oldest method with Orca with using Gutsy? Hardy is a very good release.

I managed to reproduce this bug on hardy.

With Orca started and speech enabled, start up firefox. Quit firefox. Orca appears to shutdown gracefully!

I think I have found another way to reproduce this bug. Open a file or webpage with a lot of text/links. Use the arrow keys to move quickly up and down through the file or webpage. It seems to close Orca almost every time I do this. If you still have speech after moving rapidly through a file, start moving by letter and word, there's a 90 percent chance the bug will happen then. Pressing alt-f2 and typing orca followed by enter brings it back. I am not sure if it is actually closing Orca or just losing speech though.

In sound preferences in system/settings menu I tryed uncheck enable software mixing (esd). After this, Orca not lose speech, but the sound playback is very slow.
This not a big problem. all sound device I setted up alsasink, and after this, I doing following steps:
1. install alsa-oss package:
sudo apt-get install alsa-oss
2. Edit the GNOME_Speech_SynthesisDriver_Espeak.server
file and replace this line:
                type="exe" location="/usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver"
with this line:
                type="exe" location="/usr/bin/aoss /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver"

Quit orca, and rerun Orca. After this modification, my Orca work eight hour ago with not speech loss.

Possible fix native this problem? If turn on softvare mixing feature (/desktop/gnome/sounds/enable_esd setted up true), Orca lose speech again.

It is still happening in Intrepid. I only tried Jaunty briefly, and I can't really remember if I had that problem there or not.

I use espeak with gnome-speech. I have tried speech-dispatcher and the problem seems worse with it, as in the loss of speech happens every 5 or 10 minutes. It also happens with ibmtts.

I will be testing Jaunty dayly release.
The yesterday dayly live cd I seeing if the accessibility mode is
selected, the pulseaudio service is disabled when I logged in the gnome
session.
pgrep pulseaudio does'nt produce a number, so I think pulseaudio is not run.
This is right?
I use Jaunty since Alpha3, so, Jaunty better and better the development
period, and if I disabled pulseaudio with oldest Jaunty Alpha releases,
this speech lost problem not produced Orca my free machines (my Desktop
computer, my Toshiba Satelite L300 notebook and my Asus Eeepc701 netbook).

If the pulseaudio disabled by default when the accessibility
installation is choosed, this is the right way to solve this problem my
free machines.
