Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-orca

If i select accessible mode with f5 key, selecting free down arrow key with screen reader and pressing two enter key, orca can not start automaticaly when the desktop is loaded. This bug is present with ubuntu 7.10 live cd, and ubuntu hardyheron alpha4 releases. I am think it is an important bug.

Hardy alpha 4 is known to not work, and that is to be expected, since it is a development release, however the issues are known, and will be addressed.

As for gutsy, unfrotunately the live CD accessibility mechanisms didn't get enough testing, and so it ended up being a bit broken. However, most users tend to follow the Ubuntu install guide at the Orca wiki http://live.gnome.org/Orca.

As I said above, I'll be doing the upmost to make sure this does work for hardy.

I tried to use Orca Screen Reader following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Accessibility with the Live CD.

The CD is xubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso dated 30-Oct-2008 . I put the CD in, hit ENTER when the language selection came up, hit F5, 3, ENTER, ENTER. When the desktop appears, the only way to start Orca was to press Alt+F2, type orca and then hit Run.

I tried this on two different computers, a P4 1.4GHz with 1GB RAM and a 64-bit 2.2GHz with 3GB RAM. Even waiting 5-10 minutes had no effect.

I experience the same using the Hardy 8.04.1 liveCD; Alt+F2 orca (or starting orca from the terminal) must be used in order for the Orca screen reader to start.

Blind/limited sight users simply cannot be expected to use an 'Alt+F2 orca' option when the base F5, 3 (Screen reader) shows as available with the liveCD. Please escalate/resolve this issue.

Making this high importance since it greatly affects blind and low-sight users
