Btw, I tried it with local files, and it works flawlesly.
It must be something to do with the gvfs

gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/wandita/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=wandita)

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-mplayer - 0.6.2-0ubuntu1

---------------
gnome-mplayer (0.6.2-0ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (LP: #236591)
    - Fix SIGSEGV crash when playing song from storage mounted by sshfs
      (LP: #232396)
    - Fix problem with 'Save As..' where filename started with a /
      (LP: #236887)
  * Remove debian/patches/fix_{drop_callback,mntent_compat_headers}, because
    they are implemented upstream
  * Document new command-line option -q, --quit_on_complete, and old
    --disable{framedrop,ass,embeddedfonts} in man page
