Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

Hello, I have recently upgraded my ubuntu 32bits pc from feisty to gutsy gibbon beta.
Unfortunately, the application menu is empty.

The only stacktrace I can submit is the output of alacarte :

$ alacarte
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/apt/progress.py: inconsistent use of tabs and spaces in indentation
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 36, in <module>
    main()

    app = MainWindow(datadir, version, sys.argv)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line 49, in __init__
    self.editor = MenuEditor()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 36, in __init__
    self.__loadMenus()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 44, in __loadMenus
    self.applications.dom = xml.dom.minidom.parseString(util.getUserMenuXml(self.applications.tree))
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Alacarte/util.py", line 197, in getUserMenuXml
    name = tree.root.get_menu_id()
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_menu_id'

Thanks in advance
Regards,
Alexandre

Marking this as confirmed as this has also happened to me after the latest batch of updates. I see the same error in .xsession-errors as is listed above when I try to fire up alacarte.

A work-around for me was to copy /usr/share/ubuntustudio-menu/applications.menu into my .config/menus directory. Obviously this won't work for non Ubuntustudio users, but copying /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu (attached) to ~/.configs/menus/ will do the same job for standard Ubuntu.

Thank you for your bug. Does it happen with a new user? Looks like some .config local modifications are creating the issue. Why do you think that's a gnome-menus bug?

closing, that doesn't look a gnome-menus bug and works now, either your menu editor wrote broken datas, the menu got corrupted or ubuntustudio does weird menu changes.

I can confirm this bug and the solution posted above. In my case I had to do:
cp /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.orig.dpkg-new ~/.config/menus/applications.menu
And I used to have ubuntustudio Gutsy and removed it just before upgrading in order do a normal upgrade of ubuntu-desktop.
