USB headset not selectable in Output tab of Sound Preferences

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty, my USB headset shows up in the Hardware tab, but not the Output tab. Hence, it is no longer selectable as an output device.

same problem here, with my usb headset (0d8c:000c) after upgrading to natty, when I plug them in I get:

cannot find the slot for index 0 (range 0-0), error: -16
cannot create card instance 0

After plugging in, Sound Preferences dialog shows in hardware tab:

If I press the button "Test Speakers", the Sound Preferences window closes, as if crashed. No sound.

Headphone input device does not show in Input tab.

Headphone output device does not show in output tab.

Launching gnome-volume-control from terminal, and clicking "Test Speakers" results in:

this bug about test speakers crash should be unrelated to the headphone missing problem, at least for me I cannot use my usb headphone but the "test speaker" function of my standard onboard audio is fine.

I think we should follow Colan advice and post about the test speaker crash on the bug #775338

To me, they seem related. I can "Test Speakers" on the standard audio, but not on the headphones. I suppose a hardware driver bug could be exposing an unrelated gnome-volume-control bug, though. All of this worked fine in lucid & maverick.

This is more than just "nice to have" for me - I use the headset / microphone extensively for speech recognition. This bug has completely removed that capability.

I can confirm the same symptoms as above - usb headset / mike appears in "hardware", but not in input or output. Sound preferences also crashes if you attempt to test the speakers.

For some reason, my headphones began working automagically last night. No idea why, but now everything works fine. Gnome-volume-control doesn't crash anymore, and the headphone shows up in output and is selectable. Go figure.

I couldn't afford to wait for a fix, so I re-installed 10.10. I didn't realise just how much I had configured over the years of Ubuntu upgrades; it took up a lot of time getting back to where I was - a shame this one caused me to revert and spoil the good record.

Although I could install 11.04 on my laptop to try ..

This bug is unfortunately affecting me aswell, and my USB Headset is quite important to me for Guild Vent and the like. Doing a "killall pulseaudio" will make the device show up and such however, and it seems to be working fine after that, including the "test speaker" button. Will report back after more testing.

still affected by this bug, killall pulseaudio doesn't help, infact the usb headset simply won't show in my /proc/asound/cards nor in my hardware tab of the gnome volume manager

the fact that Dennis found his headphones working magically again out of nothing probably only proves that it's completely unrelated to the matter, none of us that cant even see the device in the hardware tab can, infact, experience any kind of crash with gnome-volume-manager or test speaker so as I already said I'd suggest to keep the bugs separated

This still affects me. GN 2000 USB headset. I plug it in, and it shows up in PA's Volume Control under "Configuration" but it is not shown under Output Devices or Input Devices. Likewise for the KDE volume control.

I have not tried to use sound for a while, so this may relate to the updates noted by David Robert Lewis ... I am back where I was in my post here of 2011-05-04 (#10):

usb headset / mike appears in "hardware", but not in input or output. Sound preferences also crashes if you attempt to test the speakers.

I tried the killall pulseaudio of #19 and this made the headset appear in the outputs (but no mike on the inputs). The "test speakers" function no longer causes a crash - but there is no sound, so it is not much of an improvement!

There certainly seems to be a regression issue here on the updates, I had be using this headset regularly for speech recognition until about 3 months ago

I am not sure whether this will help anyone, but I have just checked my laptop, which is also running 11.04 (the comment above relates to my desktop).

The laptop was last updated on 28 June, and works fine.

The desktop has had 3 updates since then and exhibits the problems described in #27

Pure guesswork, but the most likely candidate seems to be the update on the 30 June, principally because it contains firmware and kernel updates.

I am glad to see this bug because I reached my end about 5 min ago.

I have the exact behavior as is described above, i.e. usb headset and no devices listed in the input and output tabs of the sound manager, but I possibly have 2 added complications. No 1, I am running ubuntu precise (12.04) and No 2, I am running a ltsp version with the client needing to see the usb headset (We have a callcenter to which we will roll out this setup). I cannot sudo from the client as the server holds the user permissions, and the server does not reflect any pulseaudio processes, even if I chroot the image directory. I don't want to fluff the issue here, but if there is any help of any kind it will be one step further than I am now.

This was a modprobe issue for me.

I had the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

  options snd-usb-audio index=0

Removing that line resolved the issue. The headset is assigned index 2 instead of index 0, as 0 and 1 are taken by my sound cards.

I had this on a previous kernel, then it went away and now it has come back. 3.2.0-60-generic-pae #91-Ubuntu SMP .
Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo T61P.

In 'sound settings' the headset shows in the 'hardware' tab, but not in 'input' or 'output'.

In pavucontrol it shows in the input devices, but not in output. Previously, tinkering in pavucontrol made it come back. Not this time.

I *think* I can make it work by ensuring that the headset is unplugged when I login and then plugging it in later. This trick works at least some of the time.

That bug is old and about gnome-media which is not even used anymore, if you still have the issue in newer Ubuntu version you should probably open a new bug against gnome-control-center or unity-control-center instead

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04. Plugging in the usb headset makes it show up in the configuration tab of pavucontrol, but not in the output tab.

$ killall pulseaudio

fixes it for me.
