Definitely reproduceable.

1. Load pidgin.
2. Open Sound Preferences. (System->Preferences->Sound)
3. Open the applications tab of Sound Preferences.
4. Watch Pidgin appear multiple times, as pidgin produces sounds (e.g. on arrival of messages)

You can also trigger it by previewing several sounds quicly in the pidgin preference dialog, doesn't seem really a bug just different actions

I can still reproduce this with the steps described above. I don't get lots that don't disappear as in my initial screenshot however.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

running 10.4, pidgin 2.6.6 (audio method set to Auto)

whenever i watch a youtube video (in chrome) and pidgin generates a sound during that movie i dont hear the pidgin sound until after i close the youtube movie (or better, close the chrome tab the video was playing in)
once i close the youtube tab it seems that all the pidgin sounds get played all at the same time (like they have been queued but had to wait for the youtube video to stop first)

when i open the sound preference - application tab (while i am watching the youtube vid) i can see the number of instances of pidgin increasing (probably with every sound pidgin generates)

this issue also frequently mutes the sound of a video when i start it (it does not mute the sound once the vid is playing)
to fix this i need to rewind the vid a couple of times and then the video starts with sound

ok, setting the Pidgin audio method to ALSA seems to fix the problem
i'll test some more and confirm (or not)

yep, setting Pidging audio method to ALSA is a reliable workaround for this problem

could it be that the Auto methode defaults to OSS ?
