Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Test case:

I'm playing an audio file, and everything is ok.
I click the "Mute/unmute PCM" button in gnome-volume-control: audio is muted, the volume slider doesn't move and the button changes to a muted image, which is also ok.
Now, if I click the "Mute/unmute PCM" button again: the volume slider doesnt' move, the button changes to an unmuted image, *but* audio is not unmuted, which is not ok.

It's an Intrepid alpha 6 clean install. My alsa info: <http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=591efcd74bc725015e44f030ecc0292392802211>.

thank you for your bug report, does doing the same in alsamixer for example works correctly?

Interesting, alsamixer can't mute/unmute PCM, but it can mute/unmute other controls like Master and LFE.

Please look attached screenshot: Master and LFE have a square with "00", which turns to "MM" when muted (like IEC958). PCM doesn't have this square, and pressing "m" to change muted state has no effect in this control.

Info provided. If you need more info please let me know.

I appear to be having the same problem. I am using an hp tx2500 running the latest updates of Intrepid. I have attached a screenshot of the problem shown in kmix. When right-clicking on kmix in the panel I can't unmute PCM. The sound appears to be working other than being permanently muted. I am getting the same results under alsamixer as Juan.

Same here, running 9.04.

After muting PCM from gnome-volume-control, unmuting it does not actually unmutes it. However, if you move the PCM volume slider after unmuting it, the sound comes back.

The problem seems to be that unmuting the PCM channel does not restore its volume (alsamixer shows volume at 0 after unmuting).

Muting and unmuting works as expected with Master and Front channels.

could you try if that's still an issue in jaunty

I am having a similar problem I think, can anyone give me suggestions ?
I just did a fresh install 9.04 on IBM Intellistation M-Pro.
I cannot mute my PC speaker , the PCM slider works on my external speakers as well,
the Master slider does nothing with the volume of my external speakers

I am seeing this in Jaunty. Also had the same problem with Intrepid as well. I am using the XF86AudioMute keyboard mapping to mute/unmute sound.

With music playing, I press the mute button. The sound is muted, the volume applet icon changes to a muted icon, and the notification is displayed showing a muted speaker and a volume bar that is all grey (volume = 0).

If I press the mute button again immediately, all is fine. The sound comes back, the volume applet icon changes to a non-muted icon, and the notification shows a non-muted speaker and the volume bar shows the original volume level. In my case, its all bright (volume = 100%).

If I wait 10 secs after pressing the mute button to mute the sound and pressing it a second time to unmute the sound, the behavior changes. The volume applet icon remains a muted speaker icon, the notification shows a NON-muted speaker, but the volume bar is all grey (volume = 0).

When in this state, there are some odd things immediately apparent:
 * the volume applect icon shows a muted speaker icon
 * the volume applet, when clicked, shows the mute checkbox is NOT checked
 * the volume applet, when clicked, shows the volume slider is still at 100

There are a couple of ways I can get the sound to return:
 * I can manually increase the volume using the XF86AudioRaiseVolume. In this case, I have to bring the volume from 0 gradually up to 100 (ie, it does not "jump" back).
 * I can click the volume applet, check mute, then uncheck mute. This returns the volume to the original level.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GNOME Media is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.

I have tested this on my up-to-date Karmic and the problem no longer occurs. Mute and unmute behave as I would expect. I'll test Lucid and Maverick and report my findings.
