gnome-media-player crashed with SIGSEGV in gconf_client_get_default()

I double clicked on a .mkv video file and gnome-media player crashed immediately.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 with all the latest updates as of Oct 4, 2011 at 10:50 PM EDT
