Not works with Apple Remote on MacBook Pro 5,5

Binary package hint: gnome-lirc-properties

I recently installed lirc (0.8.4a) and gnome-lirc-properties(0.3.1) on my ubuntu (9.04), because I want that OpenOffice works with Apple Remote. When gnome-lirc-properties starts, shows the following fields:

IR Receiver:
   - Manufacturer: None
   - Model: None
   - Device:
IR Remote Control:
   - [X] Use different remote control
   - Manufacturer: ADS Tech
   - Model: USBX-707
Configuration Test
Warning: Remote control daemon not running. Can not test buttons. This could be due to a configuration error. Try changing the configuration.

Then I click on Auto-detect and appear two receivers:
   - Apple Built-in IR Receiver (0x8242)
   - Receiver Input Linux Apple Mac mini infrared remote control driver

Select any of the two receivers but still receive the warning.

I also attach the messages displayed in terminal when I click on Auto-detect and select one of the receivers.

The Auto-detect button now chooses "Apple receiver (0x8242)". The bottom message changed to :"Press remote control buttons to test: <none>", but the bottom message never changes, neither when any controller's buttons are pressed.

With the new version there are no problems related with DBus. But it seems there are not communication with the controller and the program.

Maybe these files could help to find where is the problem:

Now is working. When any button is pressed the program recognise it (Shows the button's name in the message "Press remote control buttons to test:").

It seems a problem in hardware.conf file, the problem disappear when the line REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS="''" is replaced with REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS="".

I also found this bug in Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 468552
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468552#c2
and still don't have resolution (since 2008-10-25).

Please, anybody can fix it?

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Install lirc_0.8.5-0ubuntu3.
2. Install gnome-lirc-properties_0.3.1-0ubuntu2.
3. Run gnome-lirc-properties and click Auto-detect button.

Actual results:

The /etc/hardware.conf file is changed, the REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS="" line was replaced with REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS="''" an the REMOTE_MODULES="" was replaced with REMOTE_MODULES="''".
$ sudo /etc/init.d/lirc start
 * Loading LIRC modules [ OK ]
 * Unable to load LIRC kernel modules. Verify your
 * selected kernel modules in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf

Expected results:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/lirc start
 * Loading LIRC modules [ OK ]
 * Starting remote control daemon(s) : LIRC [ OK ]

Now the /etc/init.d/lirc daemon can't start, because it does not understand the hardware.conf file

This is not a lirc bug, it's a gnome-lirc-properties bug. Because gnome-lirc-properties incorrectly changes the hardware.conf file.

Browsing in the gnome-lirc-properties source code, the shellquote.py file is the problematic.
When receives a "" string return "''".

I attach a patch that resolves the problem.

This is certainly not Macbook specific. gnome-lire-properties is putting "''" value for empty fields in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf (instead of simply ""). This causes lirc not to start at all.

It looks like there's been a new version of gnome-lirc-properties uploaded since this patch was posted (version 0.4.0-0ubuntu1)

Could somebody verify that this patch is still needed against that version and rebase the debdiff on top of it? Please be sure to update the debdiff to target lucid when you do.
