I guess, it's my fault ... I installed gnome shell on my 11.04 laptop and it broke a lot of things. I reverted back using ppa-purge and subsequently, my gnome classic is not what it was earlier. For e.g., I can't see the audio button (however, the menu pops up when I hover over the place it used to be).

After my last update, I get a pop up saying something is wrong and I need to report it - I clicked the report and have arrived at this page.

use the command....gnome-volume-control for the audio and then proceed with it whether it requires the missing plugins or not
