As a work around till the problem gets solved: On the right of the box with an "I" (shows a square that is easy to fill) there is a blank space. This actually hides a link (marks new additions with a separate color so you can keep track of them) that allows for the tracking screen. If you click on it you get a screen that allows you to add a tracking where you use a different color. Now when you put a number in the black box it is visible and no longer black on black..

Another Work around is to change the settings=>appearance=>style. I am using the LInux Mint 13 Maya which is based on Ubuntu 12.04. By using style Mint-X or Mint-Z styles there is absolutely no problem. This style is terrible for other programs like Libre Office. When I do a string search the highlighting of the result is very difficult to see on my system. I have to change the settings=>appearance => style again.
