Bug Description
I see that when formatting a disk, Disk utility is not intrusive enough in the way it display that it is creating a file-system. Currently it is just a little circle in the bottom-right of the partition. A user who can't see this may think that it is OK to quit the application. Disk Utility should not allow quitting (besides kill -9) while it is working with a filesystem.
I wanted to try this to see if it would break and it does:
Open Disk Utility
Select a disk and format a partititon
Close Disk Utility while formatting
Expected:
Warning: You cannot quit disk utility while there is still an pending action.
Details > You are currently formatting /dev/sdb1
What actually happened:
Screen become gray
Force quit dialog showed up
Entire PC froze (no mouse movement)
