This bug is not a Ubuntu issue it is a firmware problem with the HP DVD writer 740B.
I have not been able to update the firmware HP apparently only likes Windows.
This firmware bug causes the drive to ignore completely some types of DVD's and CD's.
Disks from some sources work fine.
The problem is intermitant and a disk will be recognized once in several try's, sometimes not.
