Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

Ubuntu 7.04, Canon IP3000 printer, Turboprint driver, I've had no problems until now, using it for about four months.

No "pop-up" type error dialog, but properties shows "printer not connected -- will retry in 30 seconds" and "Printing: Unable to lookup host 'usb' - Unknown host".

I've installed these two updates (at least) since I last used the printer:
Commit Log for Sat Sep 8 17:16:06 2007
Upgraded the following packages:
libkrb53 (1.4.4-5ubuntu3.2) to 1.4.4-5ubuntu3.3

Commit Log for Wed Sep 5 08:24:39 2007
Upgraded the following packages:
libkrb53 (1.4.4-5ubuntu3.1) to 1.4.4-5ubuntu3.2

My error log has only this:
E [07/Sep/2007:13:56:46 +0100] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"
E [07/Sep/2007:13:58:59 +0100] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"
E [08/Sep/2007:08:47:42 +0100] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"

I can print a test page from System > printers with no problems, but not from TurboPrint driver configure program. My printer is connected directly to my PC with USB - I have no network.

The devices for your printer seems to be wrong:
ipp://usb://Canon/iP3000
The part after ipp:// is interpreted as a hostname, that's why you get the Unable to lookup host 'usb' - Unknown host.

For a directly connected printer the device should be:
usb://Canon/iP3000

What happens if you reinstall your printer queue?

If I change the URI in properties, I still can't print - but should I do a complete reinstall instead?

I have noticed that selecting "properties" for the printer pushes CPU usage right up to 100%. and the "properties" dialogue takes about 20 seconds to load.

Forgot to say - my printer properties also shows Printer Type = network printer, rather than "Local or detected printer" although my PC is completely stand-alone. Is this correct?

We have changed the default print management system in Ubuntu from gnome-cups-manager to system-config-printer because g-c-m is no longer maintained. Please open a new bug against system-config-printer if you still have this problem with Gutsy or Hardy. Thanks!
