Application? I'm clueless

1st try:
K --> System --> Printers
response: Ask for password, then crash & permit bug report.

2nd try:
K --> System --> Printers
response: Ask for password, then nothing at all.

3rd->5th try:
K --> System --> Printers
response: No response at all.
          Cursor blinks for 10->15 sec, then returns to normal.

The program seems to crash when it tries to load module "gtkhtml2", do you have libgtkhtml2-0 installed? If not you can find it in synaptic.

This is a foomatic-gui bug as indicated by the apport crash report, restoring original description.
You need to install the python-gtkhtml2 package! On an Ubuntu (GNOME) system this package is installed by default, but on Kubuntu you need to install it manually (foomatic-gui has no dependency on python-gtkhtml2).
Not sure if we can call this a bug since most people using Kubuntu will use the default KDE Print Manager instead of foomatic-gui.
Any reason why you use foomatic-gui (K -> System -> Printing) instead of the KDE Print Manager (K -> Control Center -> Peripherals -> Printers)?

I do. It was installed at the time of crash.
It does seem odd to me that it would exhibit three
different behaviours in five successive runs, however.

Ah, well as a naive Linux user, I haven't a hint of a
suspicion of a clue as to what is going on behind
the curtain.........

OK. It is not installed now.

Not a clue why. Cups seemed to be the default. Is there a
actual difference? One "better" than the other? How?

I am trying to set Kubuntu to use a Brother MFC-3240C, which is
connected to a win2k machine elsewhere on our LAN. Cups doesn't
seem to know anything about that printer model. Would KDE Print
Manager be able to install that printer - in that configuration -
without me having to undertake a new course of study to learn
"what's behind the curtain"?
(I.E. Can I just Click & Go...?
That seems to be the goal of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mybuntu/Whatever)
