According to gnome-cpufreq-
Show menu
This option allows you to choose how much information is shown in
the frequency selector dropdown (see Section ― Frequency
and Governor Selector). You can select to
display Frequencies, Governors or both Frequencies and Governors.
However, this menu does NOT show up in my preferences. Please note that the right cpu_freq modules are all loaded fine and the applet works perfectly regarding reporting the amount of Mhz used each time by my CoreDuo 1.66 GHz. The only bug is that the "show menu" widgets don't show up in its pref panel, resulting in not letting me select the cpu frequency i want each time.
Ok, here is what the gnome developer told me:
"This option has been removed from the pref dialog, and it seems that documentation has not been updated. The selector menu layout has been reworked so that such an configuration option is no longer needed. In the other hand, if you can't see the selector menu by clicking on the applet, you need to set the SUID bit for the cpufreq-selector file. cpufreq- selector
Typically:
# chmod 4755 /usr/bin/
Automatically the selector menu will appear by clicking again on the applet. You don't need to reboot the applet."
So, please either by default chmod the cpufreq applet, or add it to the keyring. Because the way it is now, it is a useless applet taking space, because it does not let you change CPU frequencies or tell your laptop to go to powersave mode or not. Only root would be able to do that, and there is no root user on ubuntu.
